Discussion about deriving rulings from Quran and Hadith is prevalent amongst devout Muslims. However, such discussion needs to be guided by principles and guidelines regarding the correct application and understanding of Quran and Hadith.

During this course, students will study how leading Imams of this Ummah approached, understood and applied Quran and Hadith to derive rulings.

Subjects to be covered include:

• Understanding Ijtihaad in the era of the Sahabah.
• Why do we have Madhabs?
• The importance of a consistent approach to Quran and Hadith.
• Examples of deriving legal rulings from the Holy Quran.
• How Hadith interacts with Quran.
• The importance of Ijmaa (Scholarly consensus).
• What is Qiyaas?
